National Gardening Week: Easy growing flowers for wellbeing

When life feels a little hectic, sometimes the smallest joys can make the biggest difference. It can be the scent of freshly brewed coffee, taking in the sun for five minutes, or stepping into a room filled with flowers in bloom.

If you're looking to add some calm to your space, growing your own flowers is a lovely place to start. No need for a sprawling garden or expert green fingers, our selection of blooms are beautiful and low-maintenance - just wonderfully rewarding!

Lavender

A true classic. Lavender is loved for its soothing scent and soft purple hue - perfect for promoting a sense of calm. It grows happily in pots on a sunny windowsill or balcony, and once it’s established, it needs very little fuss. A few sprigs in a vase or dried bunch by your bedside can work wonders for your mood.

Calendula (Marigold)

Bright, cheerful and full of charm. Calendulas are sunshine in flower form. Easy to grow from seed, they thrive in both garden beds and containers. Their gentle orange-yellow petals are often used in skincare too, thanks to their calming properties. A reminder that beauty can also be healing.

Sweet Peas

If you're looking for fragrance, sweet peas are your go-to. Their delicate scent and pastel petals add a romantic touch to any space. Sow them in early spring and they’ll reward you with blooms all summer long. Snip a few for a bedside jar - simple joy at its best.

Cosmos

With their dainty petals and soft swaying stems, cosmos bring a gentle elegance to any garden. They're fuss-free, fast-growing and flower for weeks, making them a lovely choice for beginners. Their open blooms also attract bees and butterflies, a small act of kindness for nature too.

Chamomile

Known for its calming properties, chamomile is just as beautiful as it is beneficial. Its tiny daisy-like flowers are easy to grow in a sunny spot and can be dried to make a soothing herbal tea. Ideal for winding down after a long day.

Take time to grow

There’s something grounding about planting a seed and watching it flourish. It’s a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe deep, and trust the process. Growing flowers isn’t just about adding colour to your home, it’s about creating space to reconnect with yourself.

Whether you're popping a pot on your windowsill or filling a few jars with homegrown stems, these easy-growing flowers are a beautiful way to support your wellbeing, one bloom at a time.
